365 Writing Prompts - Day 40

February 9, 2017 Why I'm Not A Fan of:

Facebook

I first wandered over to Facebook in 2008 where I found a lot of people I'd lost touch with, family members in other states, those stupid games like Farmland, etc. It was fun and exciting catching up with everyone, finding out about their lives, what they're doing now, etc.

Then, people began sharing silly memes or inspirational images from other sites and soon there were only a few original posts to be found. If, Heaven forbid, someone did make a post on a topic they felt strongly about, it turned into a comment war. Other people were ugly and insulting, as if that would make the poster change his/her mind.

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a tree-hugging, singing-songs-around-the-campfire, can't-we-all-just-get-along, peace-loving, hippy freak, and have been since I learned to walk and talk. I can express a difference of opinion without being rude or belittling. Bullies bug the ever-lovin' crap outta me!

When 2015 rolled around and the presidential hopefuls threw their hats in the ring, everything went to Hell in a handbasket. The Trump supports came out with guns blazing. The liberals refused to take it lying down. There were times I could almost imagine my laptop catching fire or exploding.

I believe what bothered me most (and still does), is that Trump ran his entire campaign on fear and hatred, and half of America, including members of my family and friends I've known most of my life!, were okay with it.

Now, there's the whole "cry babies", "snowflakes", "he won, get over it", "he is your president" horse sh*t that just won't stop.

Here, I can speak my mind and no one fights with me. The people here are much more civilized and I truly appreciate that. From now on, I'll visit Facebook, check in with family and friends, but I'll stay here.

Gosh, how much do I agree with you? Wholeheartedly!
Sometimes I ask myself : why are some of my school friends still so addicted to Facebook? What is so important there? I just can't scroll and scroll and all I see is silly things that don't really make an impact on anything. I have a friend who is a great writer and a feminist, yet she writes on facebook here interesting articles and there are always stupid wars going on there. I have a friend that the only thing she does is say good morning or good night, every time with a different image. It is nonsense to me. I'm not saying I am more this or that, I simply don't understand why they don't get bored. I can do other things that being on Facebook, like research. The only thing I like about Facebook is that whenever you like a subject, there will always be a group or page about it. Now another thing i s that the group or page keeps with interesting things. Also I don't like the propaganda memes.

Yes, so true! It becomes overwhelming. I keep it also because I have dear friends, but I also have the feeling there is a lot of gossip or sneaking around or trying to see why this person is not answering when she or he is on facebook right now. Some people are too anxious about these things. I have a friend who is now a grandfather and yet by mistake he unfriended me. He was puzzled why I had not accepted back again being friends. It was simply because I had no idea he had unfriended me, and I did not check facebook, so I did not know he had sent me an invitation. When finally i realized it, he wrote me saying that he thought I had decided to stop being friends and he was pretty sad about it. Lol, why would I just decide that, he had not done anything wrong to our friendship. I think he was a little paranoiac >D
