April 13, 2017 - Tourist Trap - what's your dream tourist destination, what about it speaks to you?
The Taj Mahal. Now, I'm completely aware that the woman who is entombed there, Mumtaz Mahal, died in childbirth, delivering her 14th child. I know that it is a monument to the sub-human subjugation and mistreatment of women. I get that, truly I do. But..every time I see a photo in a magazine or on television, the sheer beauty makes me catch my breath.
Honestly, I try to imagine visiting the slave trade / auction sites in the American Southern States and trying to find beauty there, and it makes me feel nauseous and sweaty. However, the Taj Mahal... I long to see it, it sings a sweet siren song to my soul, 'come, come to me and you'll find peace'.

comments

Something New

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I'd bought a Samsung Chromebook. It wasn't expensive by any standard, but it has a decent size, really pretty display, and a nice, roomy keyboard. Last night, I was at How to Geek and found an article about installing a lite version of Unbuntu called Crouton, along side the Chrome OS. Crouton adds a desktop functionality and the ability to add applications such as a word processor, spreadsheet, .pdf creator, etc. I thought this sounded like a win-win situation.

After re-reading the article and following the links, I downloaded Crouton, and followed the extremely clear, concise, user-friendly instructions to install it. This will probably surprise you, but I managed to make it much harder than it really is... anyway, after about an hour, I had everything up and running.

Crouton isn't pretty.

It's a stripped down and plain looking, I suppose, to make it run faster and conserve resources. Bonus points for being easy to move around in and understand. However, finding the tools I want to add wasn't that easy. I finally got frustrated, shut everything down, and went to bed.

Ah well, the weekend is almost here and I'll have plenty of time to play with it and search for the applications I want.

comments
